Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are vital to our organization. Their commitment and generosity support us in helping families prosper through our adult literacy and family literacy programs.

We offer a number of meaningful opportunities to volunteer in the Edmonton area. We provide free training for all of our volunteers.

Treasurer - Board of Directors

We are looking for a volunteer for our Board of Directors, with a strategic mind and a strong background in accounting and finance. Would you love the challenge of adding value to our organization by looking for ways to help it become as efficient and profitable as possible? Would you like to strengthen our governance by ensuring proper financial policies and procedures are in place?

Adult Tutors

Volunteer tutors work one-on-one with adults who want to improve their reading, writing, math, or other essential life skills.

Our tutors:

  • Attend 6 hours of free Adult Program training *
  • Set goals with your learner and prepare lessons to meet their individual needs and interests
  • Provide encouragement and support to help increase both skills and confidence

Time Commitment:

  • Tutors and learners meet in safe public locations in the city at a day, time, and location that is convenient for both people
  • A minimum of 3 months with at least 1 hour per week spent tutoring over the course of the 3 months
  • This volunteer role may occur weekdays, evenings, and/or weekends as chosen by the volunteer

Are you:

  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English?
  • Friendly, non-judgmental, patient and reliable?
  • Eager to help someone improve his or her reading, writing and confidence?

Adult Program Facilitator

Adult program facilitators are paired in teams of two and work together to guide groups of learners toward their goals in a classroom setting.

We are currently recruiting for the following adult program facilitator positions:

1. Book Club - Millwoods Seniors Association, 2610 Hewes Way, NW #210

Mondays, January 13 - March 30, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (no session February 17)

Mondays, April 6 - June 22, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (no sessions April 13, or May 18)

2. Reading and Writing for ELL 2 - Riverbend United Church, 14907 - 45 Avenue

Mondays, January 13 - March 30, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Mondays, April 6 - June 22*, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
* no classes April 13 or May 18

Our adult program facilitators:

  • Attend 6 hours of free Adult Program training *
  • Do not need previous teaching or facilitating experience

Time Commitment:

  • One program session, which typically runs from September to June with 2+ hours spent volunteering per week
  • This volunteer role occurs on weekdays, during the day

Family Literacy Program Assistant

Volunteers in our family literacy programs attend one or more of our free programs for families with pre-school aged children (0-6). They support facilitators in providing a safe, welcoming environment for participants.

We are currently recruiting for the following family literacy program assistant positions:

Literacy Links
9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (plus ½ hour to set up and ½ hour to clean up)
January 14 to March 17, 2020

Books for Babies
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (plus ½ hour set up and ½ hour clean up)
May 5, 12, 19, 26, 2020

Our family literacy program assistants:

  • Enjoy greeting families and assisting parents with small children
  • Help with set-up, clean-up, and snack time
  • Feel comfortable taking initiative when needed (such as gently bringing a child back to the group)

Time Commitment:

  • Approximately 2 hours per week for the full duration of a program session (September to June). One hour of program plus 1/2 hour before and after to set up and clean up
  • This volunteer role occurs on weekdays, during the day

Do you:

  • Love being with young children?
  • Enjoy singing songs and being playful?
  • Enjoy interacting with diverse groups of people?
  • Have at least two daytime hours available to volunteer, for a year?
