Our Mission Statement:
The Centre for Family Literacy builds, develops and improves literacy with families and communities.

Dr. Seuss Star of Family Literacy Day

Dr. Seuss and a host of his animal characters came to life for students at St. Benedict Elementary School. Thanks to the generosity of WorleyParsons and CoSyn Technology the entire school was treated to the play Seussical ™ at the Citadel Theatre on the afternoon of January 25th.

“This sponsorship enabled so many of our students to experience live theatre, an opportunity that is only available to a small number of families in our school. Not only did our students enjoy the Seussical performance, but they also marveled at being in such a beautiful place,” said Lynne Andrews, Reading Intervention Teacher at St. Benedict.

That evening, students and their parents were invited to a St. Benedict’s Seussical Family Literacy Night. Staff from the Centre, Citadel Theatre and the school created activities related to themes in the play. It was such a delight to see adults and children alike participating in ‘Acting with Seuss’ drama exercises, doing tongue twister challenges, playing Seuss games on iPads and much, much more.

Several special guests were in attendance including the Honourable Fred Horne, Minister Health and Wellness; Edmonton Catholic School District Chair, Debbie Engel and Jacob Kellerman, Senior Vice President, Edmonton Operations, WorleyParsons.

Family Literacy Day is a time to celebrate the importance of learning together as a family, a goal that certainly was achieved through this unique partnership. “It was especially rewarding to form a new relationship with the Citadel Theatre and to work with St. Benedict Elementary School and Worley Parson and CoSyn Technology who have all been very supportive of our work,” said the Centre’s Executive Director, Jonna Grad.
