The Book Buddies program is aimed at enhancing literacy skills of school aged and preschool children. Book Buddies is offered in schools that serve families with limited resources. Children in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 with preschool siblings, relatives or neighbors can register for this literacy program.
- An eight-week program coordinated by school staff with assistance and support from a family literacy coordinator
- Books and support materials are provided and parents are expected to be involved in the program
- Students take a book home each week and read it often to their preschool "buddy"
- Students completing the eight-week program are invited to a pizza luncheon and at this time choose a book to present to their little buddy

- Introduces preschool children to books and gets books into their homes
- Prepares youngsters for school readiness
- Enhances preschoolers' early literacy experiences and assists with the development of literacy skills including talking, listening and understanding
- For the older child, provides reading practice and builds self-esteem
- Fosters sibling bonding as well as bonding across the grades
- Increases parental involvement in their children's education
- Helps parents become more comfortable with the school
