Think Venti

Think “Venti!” (Think Big) features award winning, youth fiction writer Don Trembath as a facilitator and mentor for creative writing sessions for “at risk” students aged 14 – 18. This program demonstrates to the “at risk” youth participants and to the community that literacy skills are the building blocks and tools for a lifetime of achievement.

Think “Venti” project was funded by The Starbucks Foundation

The Project:

• Offers a challenge for 50 Edmonton youth from inner city areas to see themselves as competent writers and as potential leaders in using their literacy skills and creativity to explore social issues and their own potential
• Encourages youth to share their ideas through their writing
• Encourages youth to share their writing with the community through spoken word performances and in magazines at Starbucks stores in Edmonton
• Provides an informal venue and an individualized approach to writing literacy skilldevelopment

The Benefits:

• Helps youth see themselves as creative and capable writers
• Provides youth with genuine reasons for writing about the world around them and their place in it
• Promotes literacy skill development
