Leading with Literacy Breakfast

Family Literacy Day (FLD) is a national initiative that promotes the importance of reading and learning together as a family. In recognition of Family Literacy Day, the Centre hosts the annual Leading with Literacy Breakfast where business, government and community leaders come together to celebrate family literacy as an innovative approach to improving literacy in our community.

Each year an individual is selected as the keynote speaker to present their unique perspective on the importance of literacy. Past speakers have included:

• Stephen Mandel, Mayor of the City of Edmonton
• Eric Newell, OC, AOE, former Chair and CEO of Syncrude, seventeenth Chancellor of the U of A
• Dr. Ruth Hayden, Professor Emeritus, U of A, Department of Elementary Education
• Manmeet Singh Bhullar, MLA Calgary-Montrose, parliamentary assistant to Minister of Advanced Education and Technology
• Jim Hole, business owner, writer, radio personality, Past-President of the University of Alberta Alumni Association
• Don Iveson, City of Edmonton Councilor, chair of the City of Learners initiative

The Lois Hole Memorial Literacy Awards are presented at the breakfast. The awards are named after the Centre's Honorary Patron, the Late Honorable Dr. Lois Hole.
